Adjunctive treatments

After detailed consultation, I create a tailored acupuncture treatment plan for you which may include adjunctive treatments, such as moxa, cupping and gua sha. You may also receive nutrition and lifestyle advice to accompany treatment.

  • Ear acupuncture, also known as auricular therapy can be used alongside body acupuncture, or as a standalone treatment.

Ear seeds are tiny 'seeds’, attached to a small sticky plaster which can be retained on ear acupuncture points to provide continued benefit after treatment.

As well as the traditional vaccaria seeds, Maggie offers Swarovski crystal and 24k gold ear seeds which work the same way, sitting on the surface of the ear and applying pressure to the points. They just do it while looking extra pretty!

  • Moxa aka mugwort is a warm and nourishing herb. Small cones are placed on acupuncture points, lit and allowed to slowly smoulder, enabling a therapeutic heat to permeate into the body and improve the flow of Qi and Blood in the area being treated. Moxa has many therapeutic benefits and can enhance the effects of your acupuncture treatment.

  • Gua sha therapy involves the rubbing of your skin with a rounded tool to stimulate circulation and treat areas of muscle pain or tenderness. ‘gua’ means to rub or press and ‘sha’ describes the red dots (petechiae) that appear on the skin as a result of treatment. Treatment can be beneficial for muscle tension, pain and to reduce inflammation. I use a small amount of oil and apply pressure, directed by you, which ensures you are in control of the treatment. In traditional medicine terms, gua sha moves stuck Qi and Blood, and releases this to the exterior. As this treatment involves rubbing of the skin, redness in the treated area is normal and expected. This is temporary and settles over a few days.

  • Cupping involves placing round, glass suction cups on your body with a vacuum effect, creating inverted pressure on the muscles. Cupping has been used as a healing practice for centuries. Benefits of this relaxing treatment include improved blood circulation and immunity, detoxification and relief from muscle tension and pain. Cupping is not painful, but you will feel a pulling sensation on the skin. Suction causes the skin and superficial muscle layer to be drawn into the cup. Please note that the cups can leave marks on your skin for a few days after the treatment.

  • Thermal Design Power (TDP) lamps are far infrared heating devices used to relieve pain and accelerate natural healing processes. The lamp has a plate coated with 33 important minerals for the human body. Infrared light therapy increases blood flow to the area, providing extra oxygen and nutrients to damaged tissue. The lamp deeply heats the area being treated without burning.

  • LED light therapy is a safe and effective treatment for a variety of skin complaints in which different wavelengths of light penetrate the skin to varying depths. It effectively improves skin health, rejuvenates cells, stimulates collagen production, reduces inflammation, fades pigmentation and scarring, and can kill acne-causing bacteria on the skin’s surface.

The Flex MD used by Maggie is the gold standard of professional, portable LED Phototherapy powered by unique Dermalux technology.

The appliance is medically CE certified for acne, psoriasis, wound healing and pain relief (muscular skeletal). Featuring the most clinically proven wavelengths backed by science, the Flex delivers unrivalled results supported by hundreds of professional case studies.
